DMV demerit points remain on record for two years from the date that the offense is committed. The dates that demerit points are removed from your driving record are not correlated to the dates that convictions are removed from your record.

DMV demerit points are not related to insurance company points. Insurance company points are created by individual insurance organization.

For each full calendar year that you hold a valid Virginia driver’s license and incur no violations or suspensions, Safe Driving Points are assigned

Completion of a driver improvement clinic may also earn you safe driving points. A total of five safe driving points can be accumulated, and may be used to offset demerit points.

DMV adds additional demerit points to your record for each offense.
